This is the
Scientific Angler The One Thirty, a considerably
smaller and narrower version of the Viscount
150 or
SA The One Fifty shown above. It still hold enough
backing for most steelhead. This reel comes with two
extra spools.

$180
Hardy
Marquis #10, 3-7/8" diameter, rim-control reel
with pressure cam on back of frame. Another in my
favorite steelhead/salmon series of this diameter,
incorporating the latest of gadgets. Almost
infinitely variable tension can be set or applied.
Holds a
lot of backing (at least 100 yards of 20 lb. test
Dacron), plus a full flyline. Comes with a loop
connection for attaching a shooting head. Very
good shape.
Price:
$190
Among
the imitation Hardys is a series developed for
Cabela, probably the biggest retail seller of
fishing tackle in the world. Whomever it was
designed a rim-control model of the Hardy
Light-Weight Series, rivet by rivet, with an
identical checkwork, handle, and reel foot. The
tolerances, however, are not as close, and the
metal in the pawl and frame are lower grade. The
reel is quite serviceable and fishes nicely.
This is the Cabela
Cahill 1, the smallest one made (though Hardy
makes one in its series smaller), is about 3-3/8"
in diameter and holds about 50-75 yards of
backing, plus a flyline in 3 or 4 weight. It has a
Hardy-type screw tension knob on the frame and
inside two springs and pawls convertible for
left-hand crank.
No longer made, and a
shame, too, for these Hardy knockoffs are good
fishing reels at a modest price.

Price: with two extra
spools, backing, and lines, $115
Two Japanese imitation
Hardy Princesses, with close tolerances, 3-1/2" in
diameter. Refinished beautifully in light grey
enamel by my old fishing pal, Arnold Timm, a metal
worker. Note handles are not riveted, as with the
Hardys, but are screw attached. Same checkwork as
a Hardy and smooth running. One with a well-used
full SA Hi-D line, the other with a type 4 brown
sinker, virtually unused. Appear to be WF7Ss.
Might be 8s.
Very nice and
serviceable and vastly superior to other copies.
Price: $75 each, or the
pair for $140.
Cabela Blue Ribbon 3,

a Perfect of the same diameter. Adjustable drag cam,
plus rim control. Nice looking black enamel
finish.

or spare spools.
Price: $85, with two spare
spools.

Many fishing tackle manufacturers
obtained cheap reels from the Orient that were
imitations of the Hardys, but few of them were any good.
They had bad metal and poor tolerances. Cabela issued its Cahill series and
carried it for several years, then abandoned it
for something new and more fashionable. They were
pretty good reels.
The Cahill (Cahill one pictured, with two extra
spools) was an imitation of the Princess and
measured 3-1/2 inches in diameter. It had twin
pawls that can be engaged for either right- or
left-hand crank and a tiny screw-type tension
adjustment knob, just like all Hardys have. But
the Cabela designers added one important modern
feature that the Hardys lacked--rim control.
(This can be clearly seen on the spare spools
pictured.) The black enamel finish is quite
elegant and wears better than the Hardy finish
does. Most all other features were
direct copies from the Princess. And spool
capacity is identical. Shaft and pawl and screw
drag mechanism are not inferior to Hardy, and
tolerances appear to be first-rate, with no
binding and smooth spool running on a fish.
Reel with two extra spools, plus backing and brand
new lines. Price: $225
